What I need to do a PhD
To join a doctoral programme, you need to meet the minimum access requirements in terms of previous studies and comply with any specific admission criteria of the doctoral programme concerned.
(According to the provisions of Spanish Royal Decree 576/2023, of 4th July, amending Spanish Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28th January, regulating recognised doctoral courses; Spanish Royal Decree 1002/2010, of 5th August, on the issuance of official university degrees: and Royal Decree Spanish 641/2021, of 27th July, which regulates direct grant of subsidies to Spanish public universities for modernisation and digitialisation of the Spanish university system within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.)
You can apply for admission to a UVic-UCC doctoral programme if you meet any of the following entry requirements:
- In general, to access a doctoral programme you should hold a recognised Spanish degree or equivalent and a master's degree or equivalent, and have passed at least 300 ECTS credits in total in these courses.
You can also gain access in the following cases:
a) You hold a recognised Spanish university degree or equivalent Spanish degree, you have passed at least 300 ECTS credits in total in these courses and you can certify Level 3 of the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education.
b) You hold a degree from a foreign educational authority within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), without the need for validation, certifying level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework, provided that in the country of issue this certificate enables access to doctoral studies. This type of admission does not mean that the previous degree of the person concerned has been validated, nor that it is recognised for any purpose other than that of accessing doctoral studies.
c) You hold a degree from a foreign education authority outside the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), without the need for validation, provided that UVic-UCC has previously been able to verify that it certifies a level of training equivalent to that of the recognised Spanish master's degree and that in the country of issue this certificate enables access to doctoral studies. This type of admission does not mean that the previous degree of the person concerned has been validated, nor that it is recognised for any purpose other than that of accessing doctoral studies.
d) You hold another doctoral degree.
e) University graduates in a specialist health training position who have received positive assessments for at least two years of training in a programme leading to official recognition in one of the specialisms of Health Sciences.
University Academic Administration (AGA) (doctorats@uvic.cat) reviews these requirements. If you do not meet these general access requirements, AGA will notify you and the admission process will be discontinued.
Candidates who meet the following entry requirements may gain access to doctoral studies:
- You hold a recognised Spanish bachelor's degree or equivalent and a master's degree or equivalent, having passed a total of at least 300 ECTS credits in these courses.
You can also gain access in the following cases:
a) You hold a recognised university degree from Spain or from another country in the European Higher Education Area, enabling access to a master's degree in accordance with the provisions of Article 16 of Spanish Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29th October, having passed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits in total in recognised university courses, at least 60 of which are at master's degree level.
b) You hold a recognised Spanish degree of at least 300 ECTS credits, in accordance with European Community legal regulations. These graduates need to undergo additional training unless the syllabus of the corresponding degree includes research training credits, equivalent in training value to the research credits of a master's degree course.
c) University graduates in a specialist health training position who have received positive assessments for at least two years of training in a programme leading to official recognition in one of the specialisms of Health Sciences.
d) You hold a degree from a foreign educational authority, without the need for validation, provided that UVic-UCC has previously been able to verify that it certifies a level of training equivalent to that of the recognised Spanish master's degree and that in the country of issue this certificate enables access to doctoral studies. This type of admission does not mean that the previous degree of the person concerned has been validated, nor that it is recognised for any purpose other than that of accessing doctoral studies. The doctorate obtained through this track is fully valid in Spain. Consult the UVic-UCC document legalisation process.
e) You hold another Spanish doctoral degree obtained in accordance with previous university regulations.
f) You hold a Diploma of Advanced Studies (Spanish Royal Decree 778/1998) or a Diploma of Qualification for Research (Spanish Royal Decree 185/1985) corresponding to a related doctoral programme.
g) You hold a recognised university degree corresponding to level 3 of the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education (MECES), in accordance with the provisions of Spanish Royal Decree 967/2014, of 21st November, establishing the requirements and procedure for validation and declaration of equivalence to a degree and at recognised university academic level and for validation of foreign Higher Education studies, and also in accordance with the procedure to determine the correspondence to the levels of the Spanish Framework of Qualifications for Higher Education of recognised certification as Architect, Engineer, Graduate, Technical Architect, Technical Engineer and Foundation Degree Holder.

Further to general access requirements, the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme (CAPD) may additionally require:
- A personal interview (obligatory in Integrated Care and Health Services)
- Accreditation of knowledge of a foreign language
- Letters of recommendation or academic endorsements
- Curriculum vitae of the supervisor, if you propose someone external to UVic-UCC
- Other documents that the CAPD deems appropriate
