At UVic-UCC, we are not responsible for the student visa application process.
Each applicant must consult the entry requirements to Spain, either on the Ministry of the Interior website, or at the Spanish Embassy or Consular Office in their country.
We recommend applying for a student or internship visa at the Spanish Embassy in the student’s current country of residence.
IMPORTANT: We advise against entering Spain with a tourist visa, since once in Spain the process of legalizing a stay for studies or an internship can be long, complicated and may even involve hiring a private legal service.
Study: Stays of up to 3 months Abrir/Cerrar
Stays that do not exceed 3 months
- Countries whose national citizens are exempt from the obligation to apply for a visa for stays of up to three months. These people must meet the legal requirements included in the Schengen Code and, if they need to extend their stay, they can request an extension for a maximum of three more months. (European Directive EC No. 539/2001 of 15 March 2001)
- Countries whose national citizens must have a stay visa (type C) to enter the Schengen Area. (European Directive EC No. 539/2001 of 15 March 2001)
Study: Stays of up to 6 months Open/Close
Stays longer than 3 months and not exceeding 6 months
Citizens who wish to study in Spain for more than 3 months and less than 6 must process a:
Type D study visa of up to 180 days
There are visas (type D) for studies that allow stays in Spain for periods of up to 180 days. This type of visa does not allow you to process a foreigner identity card (TIE), but it does contain a foreigner identity number (NIE).
Citizens who wish to study in Spain for more than 6 months must process the following:
Embassy at origin: Open type D study visa (authorization to stay for studies)
Once in Spain: Foreigner identity card (TIE)
- This type of visa is valid for three months and you have one month after entering the Schengen Area to apply for the foreigner identity card (TIE).
- It is a temporary stay permit that is valid for the duration of the study stay in Spain.
- The permit is granted for a maximum of one academic year (or two years in the case of studies carried out at an authorized higher education institution, leading to the award of a recognized higher education qualification when it includes a preparatory course or compulsory internships). It can be renewed as long as the studies are ongoing and good use of the previous course is demonstrated.
- The visa can be requested at the Spanish consulate or embassy closest to the town of residence.
IMPORTANT: All foreign public documents must be previously legalized and translated into Spanish or the co-official language of the territory in which the application is submitted.
