Family members from a country outside the European Union who are going to stay in Spain must obtain:
The type D visa for a student’s family members in the country of origin
The visa can be requested in the Spanish consulate or embassy closest to the city of current residence. Once in Spain, a visa cannot be changed.
Without this visa, you cannot obtain the study stay permit for family members that is required to stay legally in Spain.

Study stay permit
This is a temporary stay permit that is valid for the duration of the study stay in Spain. The permit is granted for a maximum of two academic years and must be renewed on the expiry date. The document is the certificate that demonstrates the holder's legal right to remain in the country.
On entry to the European Union, students have a maximum of 30 calendar days to begin the process of applying for a study stay permit. For this purpose, it is essential to keep plane tickets (boarding pass) or to obtain the entry stamp to the European Union in the passport when the student passes through customs.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Students have a maximum of 30 calendar days to request the study stay permit from the date of entry into the European Union. For this purpose, it is essential to keep plane tickets (boarding pass) or to obtain the entry stamp at customs.

Documents to present
All documents must be submitted in the official language (Spanish or Catalan). If this is not possible, duly legalized originals in other languages (form 37), accompanied by a sworn translation, are accepted.
- Official form EX17 (original + 1 copy)
- Photocopy of passport
- Photocopy of the open type D visa for studies
- Photocopy of EU entry stamp or plane ticket (boarding pass)
- Passport size photographs (3)
- Municipal registration certificate: make an appointment at the Municipal Reception Office of Vic (oficinaacollida@vic.cat)
- Marriage certificate and/or birth certificate
- Photocopy of the receipt or holder’s stay permit that gives the right to the student’s family member (in the case of family reunification)
- Fee 790 Code 012: Option "TIE that documents the first issuance of a temporary residence, stay or cross-border worker permit."
The police station will immediately issue an official receipt for the card. The study permit card will be received from one to two months later. Its validity depends on the study period or the end of the academic year.

- Fee 790 052: the fee must be paid before submitting the renewal application and a copy of proof of payment must be provided along with the rest of the documentation. Payment of the fee does not imply the automatic granting of the renewal, but the application will be considered favourably if there is no proof of payment of the corresponding fees.
- Passport (page with personal data)
- Stay permit card
- Residence permit card of the holder that gives the right to access the regime for a student’s family members.
- Marriage certificate or birth certificate
- In the case of children, school certificate in Spain
- Financial means. The responsible family member must demonstrate/prove that he/she has the necessary financial means to support the family. (See the financial means table.)
- Medical insurance contract that covers medical expenses, if applicable, associated with an accident or illness during the stay in Spain.
