The call for selection of the UVic-UCC rector opens

The Balmes University Foundation has opened the call for the selection of the new rector for the 2018-2022 term. Candidates can apply for the position referring to the detailed profile on the UVic-UCC website, and they have from 1 September to 15 October to do so. After all the candidatures have been received, the committee will meet to select the candidates who will have to be assessed by the Executive Committee of the Balmes University Foundation.

Carmen García-Comas publishes an article on 'Nature' on the causes of the extinction of an ancestor of Homo sapiens

The high climatic variability and an increase in aridity led to the extinction 600,000 years ago of a tyoe of primitive hominid, Paranthropus robustus, which lived in Africa two million years ago. This is one of the main conclusions of a study involving Carmen García-Comas, a researcher in the Aquatic Ecology research group at the UVic-UCC.

The rector of the UVic-UCC, Jordi Montaña, said farewell to the university community at the closing ceremony of the 2017-2018 academic year, which took place at the Aula Magna today. After eight years in office, Montaña today completed his second term at the head of the institution.

Researchers at the UVic-UCC work on a European project to apply interseccionality to government bodies

A person may suffer from discrimination for various reasons, and they are often related to each other: they include gender, age, origin, religion, social class or sexual orientation, among other factors. However, government bodies tend to classify each of these situations or problems into categories, and deal with them in a segmented manner. Terrassa Municipal Council is establishing an initiative that aims to change this approach, and to apply intersectionality in local public non-discrimination policies.

The 8th international R+D+I ICT Health and Social Seminars will present the latest breakthroughs in digital therapies in Vic

The eighth R+D+I ICT Health and Social Seminars  will take place on 27 and 28 September in the El Sucre building in Vic, at an event which the organisers anticipate 400 registered professionals attending - a figure consolidating the seminars as one of the events with the most international impact in the city and in the Osona region. The seminars are structured around two framework conferences, three round table discussions, several short presentations and exhibitions by professionals and personalities.

UVic-UCC researchers study the habitats, vegetation and flora of Vic, commissioned by the City Council

Three researchers at the UVIC-UCC's Biodiversity, Ecology, Technology and Environmental Management Research Group (BETA) have carried out a study on habitats, vegetation and vascular flora of interest in the municipality of Vic. The project was commissioned by the City Council, in order to provide a detailed picture of the city's habitats and flora. This information had never been compiled in detail, and it is essential for the management of each municipality's natural heritage.

The University of Vic - Central University of Catalonia invested Maria Teresa Codina i Mir as a Doctor Honoraris Causa last Tuesday afternoon. With this honorary doctorate, the University wishes to pay tribute to one of the leading figures in Catalonia's educational renewal movement, who played a major role in education during the twentieth century.

A European project to protect, preserve and enhance alder forests in high river stretches is presented at the CERM

Last Monday, the Ter Museum in Manlleu hosted the European Life Alnus project, which focuses on improving the conservation of the Mediterranean alder groves - the typical riverside forest on high stretches of rivers which has various ecological functions.
