Origins
On 28 March 2004, Mireia Tapiador, a Physical Education and Sports Sciences degree lecturer, died in a car accident. Two years after her death, to commemorate her involvement and enthusiasm for a degree that was in its infancy at the time, the Mireia Tapiador Memorial was created, an exhibition of performances related to artistic gymnastics, sports and music, organised by Physical Education and Sports Sciences students as part of their subject Organisation and Management of Sport Events and Leisure Activities.
10 years later, whilst still retaining the artistic performances, its format has evolved to also include sports competitions, so that all university students can take part. Sports include football, basketball and volleyball, and over the years rugby, padel, and traditional games have also been added.
UVic currently has a classroom dedicated to Mireia Tapiador and from 2021 we are making a qualitative leap with a more ambitious format. We want to be a reference for the university community as a festival to strengthen ties, promote active and healthy habits and generate an experience for the entire university community from the community itself.
