The CERM, Center for the Study of Mediterranean Rivers (CERM), is focused in research, dissemination and conservation of rivers and other freshwater environments. The CERM is part of the University of Vic - Central University of Catalonia (UVic-UCC), and it is also the environmental area of the Ter River Museum.
The CERM aims to become a reference center in research, land stewardship and ecological restoration, environmental education and citizen science for rivers and lagoons, which consolidates the Ter river Museum as a natural history museum and give support to the UVic-UCC in research and formal education.
It has a permanent team of 4 people, collaborators associated with specific projects and numerous students that take part in practice placements, final works of degree, master's degree and thesis.
The CERM collaborates with other universities, research centers and numerous institutions throughout Catalonia, and also participates in international projects. For example: Community Rivers (Interreg IIIC, 2004-07), RICOVER (Interreg IVB, 2009-12), LIFE MIGRATOEBRE (Life Nature, 2014-21), INTCATCH (Horizon 2020, 2016-20), LIFE ALNUS (Life Nature, 2017-21).
Activity areas
- Research in rivers and other freshwater environments, associated with ecological status and biodiversity assessments (using riparian vegetation, aquatic invertebrates and fish as bioindicators). It develops projects on ecological conservation and solutions for improving fish migration.
- Land stewardship, conservation and ecological restoration of rivers and lagoons, by means of the signature of land stewardship agreements with public and private land owners and managers.
- Environmental education and citizen science. Workshops, activities and naturalistic field trips aimed at all publics.
- Museology in natural sciences, taking care of exhibitions and a natural history collection formed by more than 3,000 objects, from research projects, donations and cessions.
