UVic-UCC will invest the linguist Teresa Cabré Castellví with an honorary doctorate
The University of Vic - Central University of Catalonia (UVic-UCC) will be conferring an honorary doctorate on the linguist and president of the Institute of Catalan Studies Teresa Cabré Castellví (born Argentera, Baix Camp, 1947) on 5 March. The award of UVic-UCC's highest honour to Teresa Cabré is an acknowledgement of her major contribution to the modernisation of the Catalan language, with her highly valuable work in the field of lexicography and terminology, which has helped to make Catalan a leading language in the field of scientific and technological communication.
The award of the honorary doctorate to Teresa Cabré was approved by the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the Balmes University Foundation (FUBalmes), the foundation that owns UVic-UCC, on 21 November, following the proposal made by the rector of UVic-UCC, and the agreement was ratified by the plenary meeting the Board of Trustees on 16 December.
Maria Teresa Cabré Castellví is a specialist in applied linguistics, lexicology, terminology and neology. She holds a doctoral degree in Philosophy and Letters from the University of Barcelona with a thesis on lexical issues, and she has undertaken significant work in the field of terminology, which has enabled the modernisation of Catalan with the incorporation of new terms based on the application of strict neological concepts. In Catalonia, she has worked at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the University of Barcelona and finally, at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), where she has established an important school of researchers in the field of applied linguistics. She is currently the director of the Pompeu Fabra Chair at the UPF.
Her valuable contributions to the field were recognised when she was elected as a full member of the Institute of Catalan Studies (IEC) in 1989 and subsequently, as president of its Philology Department (2014-2021). During this time she made a significant contribution to the writing of the IEC's Dictionary of the Catalan Language, better known as DIEC. She also created and led the TERMCAT Terminology Centre, and Teresa Cabré Castellví has been president of the IEC since 2021. She was the first woman to hold this position since the Institute was founded in 1907.
