UVic maintains its position in the middle of the UI Greenmetric world ranking

In the Greenmetric UI world ranking of sustainable universities for 2023, UVic is the fifth-ranked Catalan university in terms of respect for the environment, behind the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the Universitat de Girona, the International University of Catalonia and Universitat Rovira i Virgili. It ranks twenty-fourth in Spain, while in overall terms it is at number 641 out of a total of 1,183 participating universities.

The ranking evaluates commitment and sustainability actions carried out based on six indicators. In this latest ranking, UVic's results for each indicator, in order from best to worst, were: waste (1,500 points), climate change (1,460), transportation (1,110), education and research (850), setting and infrastructure (595) and water (310). The scores did not significantly vary in the different categories compared to the results obtained in 2022. 

This is the ninth time that UVic has been included in the ranking, and the areas in which it has historically achieved the best scores are in energy and climate change, and waste. These two indicators assess the implementation of energy efficiency measures, the use of renewable sources, the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions, the implementation of the 3R waste policy and programmes to reduce paper and plastic use, among other measures.

Wageningen University & Reserach (Netherlands) maintains its leading position in the ranking, with 9,500 points, followed by Nottingham Trent University (England) and Umwelt-campus Birkenfeld (Trier University of Applied Sciences) in Germany.
