The Althaia Foundation is preparing to host the teaching on the bachelor's degree in Medicine at the UVIC-UCC

The Manresa Teaching Unit of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Vic - Central University of Catalonia (UVIC-UCC) will begin work next September. This is a strategic project for the Althaia Foundation, which enhances its role as a university institution, and for the region, as it consolidates its commitment to providing a range of university studies of the highest quality, and reinforces healthcare in Central Catalonia.

One of the key characteristics of the training project is the involvement of the region's healthcare network. In addition to the Althaia Foundation and the UVic-UCC, the Manresa Teaching Unit consists of the Catalan Health Institute, the Solsonès Health Centre, the Sant Andreu Health Foundation, the Sant Bernabé Hospital Foundation of Berga, the Hospital of Cerdanya, and Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Martorell.

The Board of Trustees of the Faculty of Medicine of the UVic-UCC has appointed Dr Jordi Aligué, a doctor from the Acute Geriatric Unit of the Internal Medicine service in the Althaia Foundation, as coordinator of the Manresa Teaching Unit. He will be responsible for ensuring the quality of teaching, while directing and supervising the activities carried out.

More than 150 students will be trained in this teaching unit each year after the entire degree course has been put in place, and it will have a team of lecturers with a consolidated background in healthcare and education.

At the end of June, the UVic-UCC Faculty of Medicine will present the teaching team for the third year, which will include professionals from the Althaia Foundation and the healthcare network assigned to the Manresa Teaching Unit.

The territorial deployment begins

The 2019-2020 academic year will be the third year of studies for the first year group on the degree course in Medicine at the UVic-UCC. This means that the subjects, contents and practices involved in the clinical cycle will begin, and these will continue until the sixth year of the course. The stays and teaching involved in this deployment will take place at various centres, spaces and classrooms linked to the bachelor's degree course.

From September onwards, half of the students on the third year of the degree course in Medicine, numbering around forty, will have their classes in the Manresa Teaching Unit until they become doctors according to the central precepts of the teaching project. These involve training professionals focused on the patient by means of innovation in medical education, and comprehensive and collaborative training through technological excellence. The remaining students will be trained at the Vic Teaching Unit.

The students studying Medicine at the UVic-UCC, including those who follow their training track in Vic and those who do so in Manresa, will continue to do their clinical simulation sessions at the facilities of the Simulation and High Clinical Performance International Centre (CISARC ), located at the University Clinic on the University's Manresa campus.

Sant Joan de Déu will host the Manresa Teaching Unit

The Manresa Teaching Unit will be located in the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital of the Althaia Foundation. The work to adapt an area of approximately 500 square metres on floor 0 of the historic building, where the old emergency ward was situated, will begin this week. The new Teaching Unit will have four classrooms, four co-working spaces and a study area.

The works are scheduled for completion in September, in time for the start of the academic year. The budget for the project exceeds 400,000 Euros, and will be met by the UVic-UCC Faculty of Medicine.

The entrances to the historic building will change while the works are ongoing, as the lobby on floor 0 in this area will be inaccessible. During this period, all the services and hospital wards in the historic building can be accessed along the corridor on floor 0, after the information point in the new part.
