Marta Rivera will advise the European Commission on the transition to sustainable food systems
Marta Rivera, the director of the Chair in Agroecology and Food Systems at the University of Vic - Universitat Central de Catalunya (UVic-UCC), will be part of an international working group that will be advising the European Commission on the transition to sustainable food systems. This panel of experts is organised by the European Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM), which provides independent and transparent scientific recommendations to the European Union's executive body, and includes experts from different fields across Europe's science academies.
The report that will be produced by the working group will provide a scientific perspective on feasible strategies for the European Union to move towards a sustainable, fair and inclusive food system on a timely basis. Its work will contain conclusions based on scientific evidence on health, the environment and socioeconomic aspects to be taken into account when making this transition.
The expert members, including Rivera, will meet for three working sessions, in London on 22 May, in Berlin on 18 June, and in Brussels on 17 September. A first draft of the report based on these meetings and the personal contributions by each advisor, who will be responsible for specific topics, and the final version will be published in March 2020.
