Marta Rivera attends the institutional event to mark of the International Women's Day at the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities

On Thursday morning, the director of the Chair in Agroecology and Food Systems at the UVic-UCC, Marta Rivera, participated in the institutional event organised by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities to mark International Women's Day. The purpose of the event was to highlight the role of innovative female scientists who are leading the fight against climate change. Rivera took part in a round table discussion to share and present the visions, achievements, projects and experiences of various women leaders in scientific and technical applications in this field. Her contribution focused on adapting to climate change and food security and sovereignty, and on the social role of agriculture and the role of women from the perspective of feminist studies.

The event included a tribute to the oceanographer and biologist Josefina Castellví, who was the first woman in Spain to participate in an expedition to Antarctica, and who led the Juan Carlos I Spanish Antarctic Base. It also included an opening lecture by Carlota Escutia, a geologist who is an expert on paleoclimate, and a researcher at the Spanish National Research Council's Andalusian Institute of Earth Sciences in Granada. Finally, the Spanish professionals selected for the Homeward Bound programme were announced. The Programme is committed to fostering female leadership in the fight against climate change and global challenges, with Antarctica as the backdrop and inspiration.

The morning session took place at the headquarters of the Royal Academy of Sciences, in Madrid, and was organised in cooperation with the Secretariat of State for Equality, the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology.
