BEFORE YOUR ARRIVAL
Students who are EU citizens have no legal formalities to complete before coming to Spain.
UPON YOUR ARRIVAL
All students belonging to the European Union or European Economic Area member states, as well as the Swiss Confederation, and who intend to reside in Spain for a period of time longer than three months must register at the Central Registry Office for Foreigners (Registro Central de Extranjeros) in order to be issued a certificate of registration and an identity number for foreigners (NIE - Número de Identificación de Extranjeros).

At UVic-UCC we do not take care of the student’s Visa application process.
We advise you to check the Entry Requirements to Spain, either on the Ministry for Home Affairs website or the Embassy or Consular Office of Spain in your country.
We recommend you to apply for the student/internship Visa at the Spanish Embassy from your current country of residence.
IMPORTANT: we do advise you against entering Spain with a Tourist Visa, since once in Spain the process to legalise your stay for studies/internship could be long, complicated and it could even mean to hire a private legal service.
BEFORE YOUR ARRIVAL

Types of visa
Period of studies up to three months
- Countries whose nationals are exempt (II) from obtaining a visa for study periods of up to three months. Those who have to fulfill the legal requisites described in Article 5 of the Schengen Code, and in case of having to prolong the stay, it is possible to request an extension for a maximum of three more months.
- Countries whose nationals must have a visa (I) (Type C) to enter the Schengen Area.
Period of studies up to six months
The Type D Visa for Studies allows you to stay in Spain for a period of up to 180 days (Visado D Estudios hasta 180 días). This type of visa does not allow you to obtain the Residence Card for foreign students (TIE).
Period of studies longer than six months
Those non-EU citizens who are going to study in Spain for a period of more than six months have to apply for an "open" visa for studies (Type D). This type of visa (Visado D Estudios, Investigación) is valid for three months for entering the Schengen Area and once you have entered Spain you have to obtain the TIE - Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero in order to legally remain in Spain.
UPON YOUR ARRIVAL
Period of studies longer than six months
- You will have a maximum of 30 days after entering the EU to begin the process of applying for the TIE - Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (identification card issued to foreign people living in Spain)
Read carefully if: You are a non-EU student who has been admitted to another Member State of the European Union and you will take part in an exchange or complete your studies in Spain.
ATTENTION
If you are a Non-UE citizen with a valid student permit for another EU country, and your passport was not stamped by the custom authority, you will need to apply for an Entry Declaration at the National Police Station within 72 hours of your entry to Spain in order to apply for a mobility within the EU.
BEFORE YOUR ARRIVAL
- Non-EU students who have been admitted to study or extend their studies in another Member State of the EU may seek to pursue or complete part of their studies in Spain, and are exempted from the obligation to obtain a Spanish visa for their studies
- You will have to apply for a Student Residence Permit. You can also apply after entering Spain, within the period of one month after entry.
- Documents have to be presented personally by you.

Where to submit?
- Through electronic means (on the Foreign Office Website or in the Electronic Register) In order to submit an application through the Internet, you must have an Electronic Certificate.
- Or at any Post Office through ORVE SYSTEM (Oficina de Registro Virtual)
The code ORVE where you will need to send all the documents will be the following one: EA0040477.
Documents to be presented:
- Residence tax: The TAX must be paid before presenting the renewal application and a copy must be provided of the receipt of payment along with the other documentation. Paying the tax does not automatically imply that renewal has been granted but it is not possible to favourably resolve the application unless it can be shown that the corresponding fees have been paid.
- Official Form Ex-00 (original + 1 photocopy).
- Photocopy of your passport
- Photocopy of your Student Residence Card (front and back in case you have it)
- Certified photocopy of last year's academic transcript if applicable, or a letter from the thesis tutor or supervisor.
- If you have changed your residence, you must present the up-to-date Certificate of census Registration.
- Economic means (check the table here).
- Photocopy of your medical insurance policy. From June 25th, the Social Security card will not be considered enough for NIE renewal procedure. An "Entitlement to medical assistance" is required. This is issued in one of the National Institute of Social Security offices. If this is not possible, private medical insurance is required. This private medical insurance needs to ensure no less than 100,000 euros in basic services (hospitalisation, etc.), without gaps of coverage or co-payments.
Work permit for students
Students will be able to work both for someone else’s account and for their own account directly with their student visa, without undergoing any procedure.

At the nearest Spanish Consulate or Embassy. Without this visa you will not be able to obtain an authorised stay permit necessary to stay legally in Spain.
Important
- You must anticipate the length of your stay beforehand as a Type D visa is only valid for 180 days (D Student 180 days) and once in Spain it is not possible either to renew the visa or apply for an authorised stay permit with a limited stay visa. If you anticipate staying for longer than 6 months, you will need to obtain a Type D Student Visa (open) before leaving your country.
Important
- Once in Spain it is not possible to change your visa. The only valid visa is the non-European international visa obtained from the Spanish Embassy or Consulate before arrival. Only relatives with Type D Student (open) visas can apply for the authorised stay permit for students on arrival in Spain.
- The stay permit for students is a temporary permit valid for the period of the studies in Spain. The permit is issued for a maximum of one academic year and is renewed annually. This document is proof of the legal right of the holder to remain in Spain.
- On entering the European Union you have a maximum of 30 calendar days to begin the application process for the authorised stay permit for students. For this purpose it is essential that you keep your flight tickets (boarding cards) or obtain an EU entry stamp at the airport when you go through customs.
Applying for a Student's Relative Residence Authorisation for the first time
All documents must be presented in one of the official languages (Spanish or Catalan) and, when this is not possible, originals in other languages that have been duly legalised (Form 37) will be accepted. if accompanied by a sworn translation.
Documents to be presented:
- Official form (Form EX -17) (original + 1 copy)
- Copy of passport
- Photocopy of Type D Student Visa (open)
- Photocopy of EU entry stamp or flight ticket (boarding pass)
- Passport size photographs (x3)
- Certificate of registration in Spain (empadronamiento)
- Marriage and/or birth certificate
- Photocopy of the receipt (or original) of the authorisation of stay of the Students Residence Permit holder
- For children, certificate of school attendance in Spain The Police will issue an immediate official receipt for the Permit. The authorisation of stay for the Students Permit will be received a month or two later. Its validity depends on the period of study or the end of the academic year.

You have a maximum of 30 days to apply for your Authorised Stay for Students permit from the day of entry to the European Union. For this purpose it is essential that you keep your flight tickets (boarding cards) or obtain an EU entry stamp at the airport when you go through customs.
Renewing a Student's Relative Residence Authorisation Card
Documents:
- Residence tax: This tax must be paid before presenting your renewal application and a copy must be provided of the receipt of payment along with the other documentation. Paying the tax does not automatically imply that renewal has been granted, so it is not possible renew your residence permit unless you can show that the corresponding fees have been paid. - Photocopy of Authorised Stay Permit (Tarjeta de Autorización de Estancia) (both sides)
- Photocopy of Authorised Stay Permit of the person who offers the right of the relative to visit.
- Marriage or birth certificate
- For children, certificate of school attendance in Spain
- Proof of economic means. The head of the family must be able to offer proof that they have the necessary economic means to maintain a family.
- Photocopy of the medical insurance policy that covers illness and accidents during the whole stay in Spain as well as the medical expenses.
With the new immigration law it is NOT necessary anymore to dispose of repatriation insurance in order to apply for the renewal of the NIE, although it is strongly recommended to have this insurance as it is not covered by social security.
IMPORTANT:
It is advisable to submit your renewal application before the expiry date of your student permit.
Return Permit
Those non-EU citizens who want to enter Spain while applying for an extension of a residence permit or applying for the new ID card for Foreigners (TIE), will need to apply for a return permit. The return permit will issued by the National Police Stations. You will need to make an appointment at the following web site.
