Objectives

The two main objectives of this subject are to improve and consolidate your level of English; and to develop the specific skills needed to perform fluently in a professional medium. You will engage in a variety of tasks typical of the media to practise oral and written English.

Learning outcomes

  • Discuss situations and cases in the field of study based on the interpretation of the historical, political, cultural and socioeconomic context, and its evolution over time.
  • Manage one’s own learning in order to acquire comprehensive training that allows one to develop personally and professionally in a context of respect for linguistic, social, cultural and gender diversity.
  • Master written, oral, audiovisual, graphic, hypertextual and multimedia languages in order to present information in an effective journalistic form, in Catalan, Spanish and English, adapting to the medium and audience.

Content

The course is divided into the following units:

  1. Newspapers
  2. Radio
  3. Magazines

Each unit will cover skills related to the topic (writing, speaking, listening and reading), as well specific vocabulary.

See the work plan for more detailed information.

Evaluation

The course is based on continuous assessment. The assessed activities must be done during the course, and must be taken on the day stated in the work plan. The percentages of the assessed activities are as follows:

  • Continuous assessment tasks (writing, listening, book reading, online grammar exercises, magazine cover work) 50%
  • Tests (grammar and vocabulary) 30%
  • Project (radio programme) 10%
  • Participation in class activities 10%

An average mark of 50% is needed to pass the course.

If your final mark is less than 50%, you may resit the Use of English Consolidation Tests and Vocabulary Tests during the resit period.

See the work plan for more detailed information.

Methodology

The methodology of this course is designed to improve your communication skills and specialist knowledge of journalism. In order to achieve this, you are required to work cooperatively in pairs or in groups, on projects of different types, to deliver short oral presentations and to develop team work skills.

The work plan, extra resources, detailed explanations of activities, and activities to be done at home can be found on the Moodle.
